A clay, ceramic, or metal conduit installed inside of a chimney, intended to contain the combustion products, direct them to the outside atmosphere, and protect the chimney walls from heat and corrosion.

The installation of a flue liner is highly recommended where any heating appliance is to be installed and flued through a masonary chimney. American tests in the 1980's revealed unlined chimneys to be so unsafe that researchers deemed them to be "little less than criminal". The Primary Functions of Chimney Liners: Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive by products of combustion (e.g. soot).

Liners provide a correctly sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. Modern woodburning stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a correctly sized flue to perform properly.

The chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a passage out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. An incorrectly sized liner can lead to excessive soot build up in wood-burning stoves, and the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.

Eldfast Ceramic liner

ELDFAST is a wholly ceramic material composed of two elements: a refractory ceramic aggregate in powder form and a resin bonding agent that together create a "slurry" with adhesive properties when applied under pressure.Traditionally, only materials containing water, lime / clay mortar or cement have been available to re - parge a flue internally, these materials are now known to be prone to acid attack and deterioration.

Pumice Liner

alt

Pumice is a natural material made from volcanic pumice, these are all a very similar way of lining your chimney as a flexible liner but also help the stability of old chimneys.

Pumice is a natural insulator, able to maintain the temperature of flue gases when other products have allowed the temperature to fall below the dew point.

The high insulation properties also mean that heat is not transmitted to the outside.

Although pumice chimney liners can be used to repair an old chimney, they are more commonly used as a lining to a newly built chimney and are suitable for all fuel types.
