What is a DEFRA approved Stove and what dose it mean?
In the UK each local authority has designated several 'smoke control zones'. In a Smoke Control zones it is illegal to burn wood in a stove which has not been approved by DEFRA for burning wood in smoke control areas. Therefore if you live in one of these areas and intend to burn anything other than smokeless fuel it would be highly recommended that the stove you purchase is approved by DEFRA for burning wood in a smoke control area ('DEFRA approved' for short).
Very often stoves not approved by DEFRA for burning wood may be more efficient and offer better controllability than its DEFRA Approved counterpart, and be slightly less expensive, so it is worth checking with your local authority/stove surveyor if you are in a Smoke Control zone. |
